Testimonials
Jeannie Teague, Co-Coordinator of Diabetes Support for the San Diego Center for the Blind has been testing herself for a number of years. She and Dr. Robert Jackson work with Advanced Diabetes Supply to help students obtain the Prodigy talking meters and supplies. She says “Every patient has been very happy with the Prodigy talking meters. New technologies and treatments give people with diabetes more reason to have hope. The Autocode and the Voice are icing on the cake. They are fully functional, easy to use; require a small blood sample size, as well as the addition of the voice function. The home delivery option for the visually impaired is a big relief, saving their family and friends a trip to the pharmacy, and Advanced Diabetes Supply has been very good at making the paperwork very easy.”

Community Outreach:
Blood Glucose Meters for the Visually Impaired

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in America. It is estimated that 3.2 million people in the U.S. are visually impaired, and the percentage of the population with Diabetes is growing.
Due to the correlation between the rate of blindness and Diabetes, Diagnostic Devices, Inc. has created talking Blood Glucose Meters to enable patients with poor vision to test their blood sugar more easily and efficiently.
Their newest meter, the Prodigy Voice, was awarded the Access Plus Award (A+) by The National Federation of the Blind. “The A+ Award program was designed to reward companies that make consumer products that are truly accessible for blind people” said Eileen Rivera Ley, Director of Diabetes Initiatives for the NFB on the Access Plus Award.
The Prodigy Voice comes with a CD of audible instructions on how to operate the meter and how to complete a blood glucose test.
Advanced Diabetes Supply (ADS), Carlsbad, CA, is a pharmacy specializing in Diabetes Supplies and has recognized the need in the Blind Community for more accessible products to aid in Diabetes management.
ADS has been working extensively with Blind Centers and Diabetes Educators to help diabetics obtain a Prodigy® blood glucose meter and testing supplies. The program has been a huge success due to the ever-increasing need for talking blood glucose meters. One of the main questions asked by those learning of the talking meter for the first time is, “How do I get one of these?”
Advanced Diabetes Supply answers that question by assisting the visually impaired or blind diabetics through the entire process of obtaining a talking blood glucose meter. ADS completes the insurance paperwork, documentation, and also provides home delivery of the testing supplies to the student or patient’s home.
